Sowo

How it works

One system, from booking to reputation.

Sowo combines provider storefronts, service bookings, product sales, Stripe-managed payments and transaction-backed reputation in one place. Completed activity is recorded in a cumulative Trust Passport, so what a customer reads about a provider comes from work that actually happened.

The mechanisms

  1. Before a provider appears

Every provider is reviewed by the Sowo team before their profile goes live. Providers can also verify their identity, which earns the verified seal. Editing a live profile sends the change back for review before it appears publicly.

  2. Services and products in one place

A provider can take service bookings and sell products from the same profile. Both run through the same account, the same payment flow and the same record of completed work.

  3. Payments

Payments run through Stripe, Sowo’s payment provider, and go to the provider’s own Stripe account. On a full payment the card is authorised at checkout but not taken; the money moves when the customer confirms the work is done, or automatically if a confirmed job goes unanswered for five days. A deposit is taken at checkout instead, so a provider is covered for work booked further ahead. Sowo charges no commission on what a provider earns; card processing fees apply to payments.

  4. Reviews come from transactions

A review can only be left after a completed, paid booking or order. A provider cannot write their own. An author can still edit their own words and photos afterwards, but the score and the transaction behind it are fixed once left.

Enforced by a check constraint and two triggers. A review without a completed, paid booking or order is rejected by the database, and the rating, the provider, the author and the transaction it came from cannot be changed by a later edit.

  5. Repeat customers can become eligible to vouch

A customer becomes eligible to vouch only after completing at least two bookings with the same provider, with payment released and a rating of three or higher. A vouch carries their name. A provider cannot vouch for themselves.

Enforced in the database. Every one of those conditions is checked before a vouch is accepted, and self-vouching is blocked outright.

  6. The Trust Passport

Each provider has a cumulative record shaped by completed work, booking-backed reviews, repeat customers, named vouches and identity verification where earned. A provider cannot write to it. It grows only as transactions complete.

Enforced: providers are blocked from writing their own trust fields.

  7. Reputation affects discovery

Browsing is ordered by trust signals by default, so a stronger record helps a provider appear more prominently. The signals are the ones above, not anything a provider can set.

  8. Requests

A customer can post what they need instead of searching for it. Providers respond, and the conversation starts from there.

  9. Safeguards

Every moderation action is logged against the admin who took it. Anyone can report a profile, a review or a message. Keeping payment on the platform is what makes the booking record available if something goes wrong.

SOWO Assistant

Commerce creates activity. Activity builds trust. The SOWO Assistant helps customers and providers understand and act on relevant platform information using the Sowo context permitted for their account.

The assistant supports understanding and navigation. It does not create reviews, verification results, vouches or other Trust Passport evidence; those remain grounded in recorded Sowo activity.

Built to scale across the UK

SOWO uses shared platform infrastructure for service bookings and product commerce. The same marketplace, payment and trust systems can support activity across different locations without requiring a separate technology stack for each city.

Service liquidity is local; platform infrastructure is national.

Customers need suitable providers operating within their relevant service area, but that commercial challenge is distinct from the scalability of SOWO’s underlying technology.

As eligible commerce activity is recorded through SOWO, it can contribute to distinct Trust Passport signals, including completed transactions, transaction-backed reviews, repeat-customer relationships and eligible vouches. The evidence remains grounded in recorded platform activity as the marketplace grows.

On the phone

Sowo runs on the web and as an app on iOS and Android. Providers set up and manage their services in the app; customers can browse, book and message from either.

Where the model goes

These mechanisms are not tied to one profession. The same transaction and trust rules can support independent businesses across multiple service and retail categories.
